Set in Southern California, a father moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo.A single dad decides his family needs a fresh start, so he and his two children move to the most unlikely of places: a zoo. With the help of an eclectic staff, and with many misadventures along the way, the family works to return the dilapidated zoo to its former wonder and glory.
Based on a true story, Benjamin Mee is a recently-widowed father who moves his family to a beautiful estate miles outside the city. The only catch is that the estate is also a dilapidated zoo replete with 200 animals, and the purchase of the home is conditional on the new owner keeping the zoo and its entire staff. The Mee family subsequently sets out to rebuild and refurbish the zoo to its former glory, making new friends along the way. You’ve heard of a family moving out of the bustling city to the serenity of rural life before, but have you heard of one moving to an animal park? Probably not, but in We Bought a Zoo, a despondent Benjamin Mee, tired of spinning his tires in the proverbial mud and desperately looking to strengthen the strained ties with his children did just that with his family. It apparently worked, because 20th Century Fox picked up the rights to his book and the story is now their feel good movie for the Christmas season. The trailer below is standard fare, although I suspect it’ll still make some choke up.

A widower (Matt Damon) purchases a zoo in order to bring his family back together in this Twentieth Century Fox adaptation of Benjamin Mee’s autobiographical memoir. Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) writes and directs based on a script by Aline Brosh McKenna.
Parents need to know that this fact-based drama from Jerry Maguiredirector Cameron Crowe revolves around the impact of losing a loved one to terminal illness, and may be too sad/intense for younger viewers. The main character (played by Matt Damon) decides to move his family to a broken-down zoo and work to bring it back as a way of dealing with the pain of losing his wife. Scarlett Johansson co-stars as a zoo worker who helps with the endeavor; the cast will also include more than 200 animals. Despite the fact that it deals with grief, the movie also looks to be sweet and heartfelt and could ultimately be an uplifting story for families with older kids. I like the animals, but I love the humans.”

Matt Damon stars as Benjamin Mee, with a cast including: Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, Patrick Fugit, Stephanie Szostak, Maggie Elizabeth Jones and Thomas Haden Church. Of course, play Sigur Ros in a trailer and it always helps, but at least we know they’ll be scoring this film, too. Looks great!
